Shepherd’s Crossing assistance programs in Riley County.

Find help from Shepherd’s Crossing in the form of financial aid as well as basic needs. The non-profit, poverty fighting organization raises money from a thrift store as well as grants from the United Way and other groups. This allows the Riley County Kansas organization to provide food assistance, grants for rent or energy bills, case management and other support services.

At the main office in Manhattan Kansas will be both volunteers and full-time staff members. The groups work together in an effort to not only provide emergency help to resolve the crisis, but also direct the person to long term self-sufficiency. Whether it is a new or higher paying job, debt reduction services, or general counseling, the staff at Shepherd’s Crossing may be able to assist.

Financial help for paying bills

Shepherd’s Crossing offers financial assistance to families or individuals in financial crisis. There is also help for clients with a long term or hardship to help with basic needs. If qualified, it will be based on need and income. There is no discrimination and anyone can apply, regardless of an individual’s background, religion, age, or income.

It can be difficult to pay for rent, medical bills, or energy costs. Any person can experience a crisis, and some of the more common reasons for a hardship may be a job loss, car repair, an unexpected medical bill, a women in an abusive relationship, or some other type of unplanned for crisis. Clients that fall into a hardship, that have a plan for stability, can get rent help if they are faced with an eviction. Shepherd’s Crossing may also have funding available for emergency utility bill assistance and other needs. Clothing, free food, and other seasonal aid is offered too.

Shepherd’s Crossing will offer short term support, while helping all clients (and their families) work toward long term self-sufficiency. This is just one of the many eligibility requirements in order to get help.

Debt, budgeting and other Shepherd’s Crossing programs

One of the greatest things that Shepherd’s Crossing can do is to help their clients become self-sufficient. Just providing a box of food or maybe a few dollars to pay a bill does not end the cycle of poverty and hardship. Therefore the organization focuses on the bigger picture, which is education, employment, and financial literacy among other things.

Clients need to take personal responsibility for their actions. They need to learn how to budget, gain new skills, and find newer or better jobs. All of this is critical to becoming self-sufficient. There is also information on making money work for yourself through free passive income.

To make this happen there are case managers on site. Before any aid is given out (whether for rent, medical, food, etc.) an assessment is done about the client. Based on the results some form of case management will be required. This can include everything from debt or budget counseling to employment, educational resources and more. Shepherd’s Crossing has computers and workshops on site and they also partner with other groups across Riley County on this endeavor.

There are other resources that can be arranged too. The non-profit will provide some basic needs, including clothing, vouchers for buying stuff, and more. The goal is to help solve an emergency and help with long term support.

The main location of Shepherd’s Crossing is at 621 Humboldt, Manhattan, KS 66502. Call (785) 776-1470 for more details.
