Vermont section 8 housing program.

Low income families may qualify for the Vermont Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program. This federal government funded resource can in effect provide rent help to families and individuals in the form of affordable low income housing and apartments. Many beneficiaries of the program are working poor, unemployed, seniors, single parents, and the disabled. The two main components are Tenant-based and Project Based Assistance.

Applications are accepted and processed in Vermont at public housing agencies and HUD certified non-profits, and the leading agencies to call for help are below. Thousands of families in Vermont receive housing assistance from this program every year.

When you apply, you more than likely will be put onto a waiting list, as the demand for affordable and safe low income housing from Section 8 is enormous. At certain times the waiting list may be closed, and no additional applications are accepted. However still call to check on the programs status.

When a family or individual is enrolled in the Vermont housing program, their monthly rent will be limited at between 30% and no more than 40% of their total household income, and that will cover both their utilities, heating expenses and rent. The section 8 rental assistance vouchers can be used in a variety of rental housing situations, including shared housing, single family homes, condominiums, multi-family apartment buildings, mobile homes, group homes and single room occupancy.

Vermont is supported by a small number of public housing and HUD certified and approved agencies that run the Section 8 program. In order to apply, or to get more information on the process, call the organization that is in the town, county, or city near you as indicated below. Some offices may accept applications over the phone or in the mail, while others may require an individual to stop by the office. A location may be able to refer individuals to additional government programs as well.
