Low income housing assistance is available from the Tennessee Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program. The government program allows families, seniors, and the disabled to lease out a home, apartment or rent controlled house. The Public Housing Authorities near you, listed below, can help low income families or individuals apply for section 8 housing in Tennessee. There are also affordable homes/apartments with no-waiting lists as part of the emergency section 8 voucher program in TN.
The HUD voucher program is available to the low income and families near poverty, but there is generally a waiting list. Very low income families, seniors, single mothers and the disabled are the primary recipients of section 8 housing vouchers in Tennessee. While there is an emergency program and priority list, please keep in mind that oftentimes there is an extensive waiting list for this housing assistance program as well as rental homes, so this is not a service that will help in a crisis.
Residents will find information on the agencies and government organizations to contact in order to apply for help in Tennessee. After applying and going through the application process, if you are accepted into the program you will be provided a monthly voucher or subsidy to use towards paying your rent for a privately rented home. This subsidy can be used to pay for housing costs, including utility bill or energy costs.
