Assistance programs in Riley County.

Find a listing of charities, churches, and government assistance programs that may offer financial help in Riley County. Struggling families and those in a crisis may receive grants or cash based loans to pay for their bills, including rent, medical costs, food, energy bills, and much more.

Manhattan Kansas area agencies also provide other support too. There may be heating oil and winter heating bill help, free back to school supplies and clothes for kids, debt reduction and credit repair services as well as Christmas toys for kids. Many programs are offered for low income families.

Get help with paying your rent, bills, food and prevent an eviction

The Manhattan Housing Authority (phone number (785) 776-8588) has received a $150,000 federal government grant that is to be used to provide rent help, funds for security deposits, and utility bill assistance to residents. The program is formally known as the Tenant Based Rental Assistance (TBRA) program, and various agencies and charities throughout the state administer it.

If someone is accepted into the program, they can receive up to two years of rental assistance. Participants will usually pay no more than 30 percent of their total household income towards their rent. In addition to the funds for rent, security and utility deposit assistance is offered on a one-time-only basis and it may be provided in the form of a loan or a grant to applicants.

There are a number of other non-profit agencies and charities to call in the Riley Kansas County region. Some of the other resources available to low to moderate income, the working poor, and unemployed include the following:

Manhattan Salvation Army runs several rent and energy assistance programs. The largest is the thrift store, then there are basic needs (food, meals, clothes, etc.). The secondary one may be the Homeless Prevention. The service is a so called last resort resource for providing struggling people with rent help as well as heating and utility bill assistance. There are a limited number of emergency funds for varying expenses and needs as they may arise. Shepherd's Crossing can offer qualified applicants utility, rent, medical and prescription assistance. Aid is for those in crisis. Manhattan Emergency Shelter, Inc. - A version of homeless prevention and rapid rehousing is administered here as well. The government created HPRP provides rental assistance to persons who are at imminent risk of becoming homeless or who are currently homeless. Financial assistance can be used for such costs and bills as paying monthly rent, heating and utilities, and money to use for moving costs. Note no funds can be used to make mortgage payments. American Red Cross has a program for Westar Energy customers only. The national agency provides financial assistance for paying for energy related needs such as utility and heating bills. Find other Kansas heating and energy assistance programs. (316) 219-4070

Patients can receive access to health care from Mercy Regional Health Center, which is located on College Ave Campus. The location is a Non-profit health center. They administer a number of inpatient and outpatient health care programs. The clinic will care for ill and injured persons. Anyone who comes to the facility, regardless of income or background, can receive care. (785) 776-3322

Northeast Kansas Community Action Agency provides assistance in Riley and nearby counties. The non-profit, known as NEK-CAP, works to help low income families overcome poverty and they address various challenges. Some of the main resources include direct financial support, applications for government grants, case management, and referrals. They also help with debt and credit issues, and learn more on debt reduction services.

Emergency rent, housing and utility bill assistance is administered. This includes everything from LIHEAP applications to funds for paying rent to avoid an eviction. Other services, including loans, can help with paying heating bills, utilities, and security deposits. Infant and child development is available as part of federally funded Head Start. This can also offer children free meals, medical and dental care. Parents can also benefit as well.

The Community Action Agency also coordinates social services for clients. This will be Family Development, budgeting classes, and information on local Community Resources. This can include information on Riley County free food pantries, and more. Eviction, foreclosure, and homeless prevention programs - Several agencies, most of which are in Manhattan KS, provide help to both tenants as well as the homeless. Flint Hills Breadbasket - This is a health care center that can help minimize and reduce both hunger and poverty through the distribution of available food. Counselors and other specialists will also nurture the programs that will help alleviate hunger and poverty in the greater Riley County Kansas region.

Just a sampling of some of the services include: 3-5 day supply of groceries or free food to feed everyone in the household, whether they are kids or adults. Catholic Charities of Riley County Kansas is a leading non-profit to call. They also work with local churches and government agencies. Several emergency assistance programs and basic needs can be served. Among them include housing for seniors, referrals to food pantries, rental and utility bill assistance, clothing, and more. Case managers can also help immigrants, the disabled, and offer referrals to all sorts of government and regional charities. Affordable and free medical care is always in need. This can be provided by community clinics in Manhattan Kansas or other sources, such as government and charitable resources. There are even such things such as websites for free prescription drugs and savings.
