Most states, cities, and counties have a number of emergency housing programs that focus on stopping evictions or rehousing the homeless. There may be grant money, financial assistance for a security deposit or moving costs, free legal aid to stop an eviction and other local city, state, or county rent assistance near you, which can be found below.
The funding will always be limited. However, some of the programs that help with rent near you may offer immediate, same day assistance. But that will be rare. Generally, a low income and/or struggling tenant should apply in advance, even before they get an eviction or pay or quit notice. But each charity, church, or government agency will have their own terms and conditions in place.
There may be different types of housing or rent assistance available as well. Low-income families, those with an eviction letter (or close to it) may find all or some of the following local, community resources. The services, which are free to call and use, can refer low income families, veterans, single moms and others to a local program near them that will offer short or long term rent assistance.
There are some national, non-profits or charities (or even government agencies) that also operate local rental or security deposit assistance programs as well. They include the United Way, Community Action Agencies or Homeless Prevention Hotline
Free pro-bono law firms, or volunteer attorneys, help tenants with an eviction notice. They can also represent low income families or the elderly in housing court.
Security deposit assistance may be offered near you as well by the same local agencies or charities.
Homeless prevention and rapid rehousing grants may be offered.
County and city governments, as well as local charities and churches, all try to help low income renters keep their home, apartment, or housing unit. Last minute, immediate rent assistance as well as other solutions are offered to this end. The goal is to keep the tenant housed, as trying to “re-house” a family is often more expensive for both the local government as well as family.
