Prince Georges County free legal aid.

There are two main places to contact for support in Price Georges County, and they include Community Legal Services of Prince Georges, which focuses just on the immediate area, as well as Maryland Legal Aid, which can assist residents in the county as well as statewide. A combination of clinics and other services are administered for the low income and those who can’t afford their own lawyers. Note that most of the legal aid is provided by volunteers who contribute to these non-profits, so there may be a wait and resources are limited.

One key service from Community Legal Services (CLS) is the referral program. Applicants who are found qualified for representation will be assigned to an attorney, and they can address a wide number of civil issues. Clients can get help with foreclosure and eviction prevention, advice on filing bankruptcy, and access to free mediation for landlord disputes.

There can also be some document preparation services done in limited cases. Staff can help clients by creating a will, or maybe process forms for child support cases. Many other programs are offered. Note, many people may need to pay a small fee as part of this referral service, however some very low income or the elderly in Price Georges will receive free aid. Call 240-391-6370 or 6395.

Foreclosure prevention is offered by both organizations. Volunteer lawyers, and their staff, will help clients with all housing concerns. They can offer negotiations of repayment, assist homeowners with loss mitigation, and entering into a home loan modification.

Government benefits can often be hard to get, or sometimes there are cutbacks to them. When this occurs, both CLS and Maryland Legal Aid can help families in Prince Georges access what they are entitled too. Receive help on obtaining food stamps or SSI disability. In some cases, the attorney can even attend a hearing with the social security administration, and a focus of these benefit services is for the disabled and the elderly in the community.

The Long-Term Care Assistance Project from Maryland Legal Aid and its partners provides free advice to the elderly or their caregivers. This was created in an effort to help low-income and working poor persons obtain health care. Attorneys and their staff will help clients get the services and supports they need to be healthy and safe, whether it be in their homes, a relative’s residence, in nursing homes, or in the greater Prince Georges community.

Clinics are held by CLS for those who are self-represented. This is very limited, and only a few people will be assisted. Services are available in English, Spanish, and other languages too, with the goal of helping the person represent themselves in court. There are sessions that focus on Latinos and Domestic violence survivors in Price Georges too.

Legal aid for housing issues is a key goal. Both non-profit, pro-bono law firms want to end homelessness in Prince Georges. So to this end, they help clients obtain affordable housing, either from section 8 or a low income apartment in the community. Another goal is to stop illegal landlord evictions and practices, restore utilities during the winter months, and ensure homes are safe to live in.

One specialist service is known as the Suitland Clinic. It handles a number of defined issues, and Community Legal Services of Prince Georges administers it. There are topics covered such as filing for bankruptcy, power of attorney, guardianship of disabled adults, family law, and much more. The phone number for this program is 240-391-6370.

Consumer Rights is when an attorney, often in partnership with a government approved credit counselor, helps clients that have been impacted by predatory lending. Many families in Maryland are also impacted by illegal debt-collection practices, and the lawyer or their staff can help on this issue too.

Most firms, including Maryland Legal Aid, provide free representation and legal advice to senior citizens, regardless of their income. Elder Rights is the service available, and it deals with medical bill assistance, access to Medicare, and nursing home barriers.

There are a couple specialty services available too. They include the Maryland Senior Legal Helpline, and this number is (866) 635-2948. Callers, who meet age requirements, will be given free advice on topics ranging from health care to creating wills and other problems. The Farmworker Program (call (800) 444-4099) is for immigrants and migrants that work in the fields. They can receive free support on topics such as pesticide exposure, unpaid wages, substandard housing, and stopping discrimination.

For more information, call one of the number above, or Price Georges families can dial (888) 215-5316.
