Programs and centers across Kentucky focus on meeting the needs of seniors. Resources are provided by non-profit Agency on Aging centers. Specialists and counselors from the centers can direct people to assistance programs, help them apply, and also provide counseling and referrals as needed. SHIP, or the State Health Insurance Assistance Program, is available for seniors, the elderly, and Medicare beneficiaries. All services and information is free, and SHIP can offer counseling, information and other forms of assistance to seniors, their family members, disabled individuals, and also their caregivers. A focus is on addressing Medicare and health care billing questions. This service is provided for free to people of all income levels. Well-trained counselors and volunteers will meet with individuals and support them. Many of the sessions are held at Area on Aging offices and centers.
Both the general public and people receiving Medicare can benefit. This is done so that beneficiaries are better able to make informed decisions about their health care needs. You can even get questions on medical bills answered.
Senior Community Service Employment Program can provide employment opportunities to people in Kentucky. The program provides job training, placement and part-time employment opportunities to qualified low-income people age 55 and older.
If someone meets qualifications and actively looking for a job, SCSEP can provide seniors in Kentucky with job training and part-time employment opportunities. Services are offered for low-income people who are age 55 and older. Participants of the program can benefit. Among other things, they can gain income; job training and experience to develop employment skills; receive free annual physical exams; the opportunity to obtain unsubsidized employment; and perform in engagement in activities that support independence.
To participate, stop by or call an Area Agency on Aging office. Applicants also need to be at least 55 years old and a Kentucky resident with an income at or below 125 percent of the federal government poverty level and guidelines.
If you are able to enroll in the Senior Community Service Employment Program, some of what you can gain includes the following. The most important is gain relevant job skills and experience at local employers. Free physical exams may be offered as well. Some of the employers may provide limited health care benefits. Participants will also usually be placed into positions that provide them with up to 20 hours of work/income per week.
Over 200 Senior Citizen Centers are located across Kentucky. Every county has at least one location, and most mid to major towns or cities have more than one center. The senior centers provide free information and assistance, social activities, meals, wellness opportunities, citizenship, volunteer opportunities and other services for people 60 and older, including the elderly. The elderly can learn about senior prescription drug plans tailored for their needs, health care, and much more. The Agency on Aging in Kentucky wants older residents to be healthy and get the medications they need.
Disease Prevention and Health Promotion provides clients with health promotion programs, routine health screening, nutrition counseling and education services, medication management screening, home injury prevention, mental health screenings, government benefits counseling, education and rehabilitation information. All of this, and more, is available from the Kentucky area agencies on aging centers and independent living programs.
The Nutrition Program for the Elderly provides both congregate meals at senior centers as well as home delivered meals. The federal government and area on aging sponsored program helps improve the nutrition and eating habits of participants, helps the client remain healthy, offers social networking opportunities, and will keep people independent by reducing hunger and food insecurity.
The Nutrition Program for the Elderly provides participants with one nutritionally balanced meal per day, and this can be delivered to them at home or offered in a congregate dining setting. Homecare Program is for residents with functional disabilities and/or individuals who are age 60 or older. It provides in home services for people who require long-term, institutional care. Services include home-delivered meals, personal care, assessment, home health aide, home repair; help with household chores, respite, and case management and social services.
The goal of the Kentucky Homecare Program is to help adults and the elderly who are at risk of institutional care to remain in their own homes. It accomplishes this goal by providing support and services to assist with daily needs, including health care and food. This is accomplished by coordinating the help of caregivers and local non-profit provider agencies.
Consumer Directed Option allows qualified Medicaid waiver members to choose their own providers for their needs. Whether they are looking for non-medical or non-residential services, CDO can help. This choice gives members much greater flexibility in the delivery of health care and other services needed to stay in their homes.
In order to participate in CDO, you currently need to receive or are eligible for services through Supports for Community Living Waiver (SCL), the Home and Community Based Waiver (HCB), the Long-term Care Brain Injury Waiver (LTC), Acquired Brain Injury Waiver (ABI), or the Michelle P Waiver (MP).
